Congratulations! You’ve picked a tour. Now you just need to take care of one pesky detail: paying for it.
Stuck on where to start? Below are a few tried-and-true ways to raise money.
Products
Selling easy-to-transport items like candy bars is a quick way to drum up sales. People tend to buy more than one item if they’re small and affordable. Have customers come to you by setting up a table outside a library or grocery store (after getting permission).
Timely tip: Take advantage of the upcoming holiday season to sell magazine subscriptions as gifts!
Local businesses
A lot of small, local businesses like to demonstrate that they give back to the community. Write a letter explaining that you are fundraising for your trip and that you’d appreciate any assistance the business could give you – this can include donated items for a silent auction, or letting you put a marked tip jar by the cash register.
Chain restaurants
Larger, national businesses like Ben & Jerry’s, Chipotle and Pizza Hut regularly offer their services to fundraisers – either by donating a percentage of their profits for a specific date and time, or donating a certain amount of money for a specific menu item. This is a smart way to raise money, because the restaurant gets more customers when you bring them in, and your friends and family get food and the satisfaction of helping you!
Scholarships
Scholarship opportunities are a great option for students who need assistance to pay for their educational tour. The Smithsonian Student Travel Liberty Scholarship is a great option for our travelers. Find out more about our travel scholarship.

Product sales are a tried and true fundraiser. From candy bars to wrapping paper, they always bring in sales. We also have had success with chain restaurants.

When approaching a local business, a good incentive for them is that you find a way to "plug" their business in any upcoming publication your organization may produce. Every business can use exposure in a marketplace, so make it worth their while.

For products, I think cookie dough would still be the best choice. Cookie dough fundraising is perhaps one of the best fundraising ideas nowadays. Hooking up with local businesses is a good way to get some extra funds. Nice job. :)

Selling Products usually works pretty well nowadays. I've found that selling candy bars always does well. Advertising for businesses in exchange for a donation seems to work great. I love the coupon books that include chain restaurants. These types of coupon books never get old!
